Turn art class into a creative challenge with Art Roulette, a flexible choice-based activity for middle and high school students. Students randomly combine prompts from four categories: - Subject - World / Theme - Must Include - Twist Each combination gives students a completely different creative problem to solve, helping eliminate the familiar “I don’t know what to draw” problem while still requiring original thinking and personal artistic decisions. Because the cards can be mixed and matched again and again, students can create countless different prompt combinations from the same resource. Built-in differentiation makes the activity especially useful for mixed-ability classrooms, with three challenge levels that allow students to work at an appropriate level of complexity. Why Teachers Will Love It - Creates different prompt combinations every time - Encourages genuine creative problem-solving - Helps students who struggle to generate ideas - Gives structure without forcing everyone to make the same artwork - Includes three differentiated challenge levels - Works well in mixed-ability classrooms - Flexible across many different art materials - Can be reused throughout the year - Works as a full project or shorter creative challenge - Great for early finishers, sub plans, centers, and choice days - Supports both beginning and more advanced art students Perfect For - Middle school art - High school art - Grades 6–12 - Mixed-ability art classes - Choice-based art - Creative thinking lessons - Early finishers - Art centers - Art stations - Sub plans - Emergency lessons - Art clubs - Drawing projects - Mixed-media projects - Beginning art classes - Creative warm-ups - End-of-unit activities How Art Roulette Works Students randomly select one card from each of four categories. Subject Students begin with a recognizable subject such as: - Animal - Food - Shoe - Face - Vehicle - Robot - Monster - Object - And more World / Theme Students place the subject into an imaginative setting or world such as: - Outer space - Underwater - Fantasy - Dream world - Tiny world - Giant world - And more Must Include Students add specific visual requirements such as: - Repeated shapes - Pattern - Texture - Lettering - Hidden objects - Unusual color - Layers - Movement - Focal point - And more Twist The final card adds an extra creative restriction, transformation, or unexpected challenge that pushes the idea beyond the obvious. Students then brainstorm, plan, develop, and create an original artwork based on their unique combination. Built-In Differentiation Explorer Accessible expectations for beginners or students who need additional structure and support. Designer Adds more developed backgrounds, pattern or texture, and multiple materials. Master Challenges students to create stronger compositions, advanced details, and more intentional artistic decisions. This makes the same activity usable across a wide range of student abilities without requiring you to create separate assignments.
