Introduce middle and high school students to relief sculpture and three-dimensional design using one of the most accessible materials in the art room: construction paper. In this project, students transform flat paper into dimensional artwork by cutting, folding, bending, curling, layering, and arranging shapes so they project outward from a background surface. Students explore the difference between two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, learn how relief sculpture creates depth, and experiment with shape, repetition, texture, movement, balance, and composition. The project gives students plenty of room for individual interpretation while still reinforcing important sculpture and design concepts. Why Teachers Will Love It - Uses inexpensive, easy-to-find materials - Designed for middle and high school art - Introduces relief sculpture in an approachable way - Combines sculpture with design principles - Encourages experimentation with paper techniques - Teaches layering and depth - Reinforces shape, repetition, texture, and movement - Includes planning before construction - Encourages creative problem-solving - Works well for mixed-experience classes - Produces strong display and portfolio artwork - Offers lots of opportunities for individual student choices Perfect For - Middle school art - High school art - Grades 6–12 - Sculpture units - 3D design - Paper sculpture - Relief sculpture - Art 1 classes - Design lessons - Mixed-media units - Low-cost sculpture projects - Portfolio work - Art displays - Homeschool art Skills & Concepts Students practice: - Relief sculpture - Three-dimensional design - Shape - Form - Layering - Depth - Texture - Repetition - Rhythm - Movement - Balance - Contrast - Composition - Positive and negative space - Paper construction techniques - Craftsmanship - Creative problem-solving - Artistic decision-making Materials Needed Suggested materials include: - Construction paper - Cardstock or heavy paper for the base - Scissors - Glue - Pencil - Ruler, optional Optional: - Colored cardstock - Black construction paper - Metallic paper - Patterned paper - Paper cutter for teacher preparation Estimated Time Approximately 3–5 class periods, depending on class length, project size, and complexity of the student designs. Teacher Tip Before students begin their final sculpture, have them experiment with several ways to manipulate paper. For example: - Fold - Curl - Bend - Roll - Loop - Fringe - Accordion fold - Layer - Twist Giving students time to experiment first usually leads to much more interesting final relief sculptures.
